About half of our website has been converted into what's called a “wiki”: simply speaking, that means anyone with something useful to contribute can edit, extend, or improve it.
The editable pages work much like Wikipedia (the online encyclopedia written collaboratively by millions of people worldwide).
In Wikipedia language, our pages are “semi-protected”. To prevent spam and vandalism, we like people to
register before they edit anything. Yes, it's a slight nuisance, but it only takes seconds. Simply click
here to create yourself a user name and password. Once you're logged in, buttons marked “Edit” will appear on the page you're looking at. Click the “Edit” button near the section you want to change… and off you go.
The easiest way to add something is to copy an existing bit of text and then modify it. Don't worry if you're not a web expert: do your best to include all the information you have and we will tidy it up for you later. If you're nervous about editing the page, you can have a practice in a dummy file called the
playGround. Don't worry about messing things up when you edit this page. We can easily restore things to how they were and we keep lots of backups just in case. You can't do any damage. Just have a go!
The UK Rivers Network is friendly, welcoming, inclusive, non-party-political, and non-commercial. Please don't post material that infringes copyright, advertisements for products or services, or anything that unnecessarily causes offence. We reserve the right to remove material such as this for any reason at any time.
One small legal note about copyright. This may sound very obvious, but when you add things to our website you are automatically agreeing that we can publish what you write. Simply speaking, you “own” the copyright of anything you write but you agree that we can publish it on our website for free, for public and community benefit. (In formal terms, you are agreeing to publish anything you contribute to our website under what's called a
Creative Commons licence.)
